Was introduced to Danish Pieds (now called Recessive Pieds) and Continental Clearflighted Pieds by a Mr Harry Shepherd, this was within months of these varieties being introduced to the U.K. A big influence was Mr Wilf Smith, a very skilled fancier who taught him the finer points of breeding exhibition budgerigars and where for the first time he encountered and was shown how to use flecked budgerigars. Gren moved to Ipswich with his job in 1975 and joined the Ipswich Budgerigar Society where in 1980 he became Chairman. Many friendships were made there which continue to this day.
